Quick update - biopsy today 9/20
Just got a call from Daniella. They're prepping Stefan right now to take him for his bone marrow biopsy. The preferred time frame is between days 12 and 14, if day 1 is the first day of chemo. Today is day 12. Dr. Williams, Dr. Olga and others have gotten together and determined that they will have the biopsy done today. Stefan is doing very well after yesterday's endoscopy, but his immunity is still non-existant. As soon as they confirm that the chemo was successful in eradicating the leukemia cells, then Stefan can start the next round of therapy, which will help his body regenerate healthy cells and bring up his immunity level. Right now, as he heals from surgery, he could use all the immunity strength he can get, so if the biopsy shows he's in remission, he could start the regenerative therapy to build up his immunity.
So this is a good thing... We weren't expecting him to have the biopsy until Friday, but the sooner he starts the therapy, the sooner he'll start getting strong enough to fight off nasty infections and other such germs.
Since the biopsy isn't done under any sort of anesthesia, I probably won't post when they're done with procedure, since there's no 'recovery period' like after yesterday's surgery. I'm sure after the biopsy, he'll be sore like last time, and he'll take a few naps laying on his side instead of his back. Results from the biopsy last time took two days, so I'm assuming they'll take that long this time as well. If they get the results sooner, I'll post sooner! Until then, just the daily update.
Ciao for now...
Suzia
